Resistance Band Training

Coach Andy Explains The Benefits

If you were locked in your house for the rest of you life with only one piece of equipment to use, what would you pick? For me,  resistance bands would definitely be my weapon of choice!

This of course, all depends on your goals too, right?

If you want to be built like the Hulk and have freakish strength, then maybe a barbell and a pile of plates would be a better choice.

But if  you are looking to build overall strength, flexibility, speed and endurance, then there are huge benefits to be reaped by using resistance bands for strength training.

The elastic material is scientifically proven to be a superbly effective strength training tool.

I’ll go in to detail on how resistance bands can play a huge factor in gaining strength and improving athletic performance.

BENEFITS OF TRAINING WITH RESISTANCE BANDS

Coach Andy’s Top 5

1. RESISTANCE BANDS ARE BEST FOR FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

Now let’s not get it twisted. Free weights are great and should be implemented with any kind of strength program, but there is one thing that they are lacking. They 100% depend on the gravity of their function. If you were to lift a dumbbell, the resistance encountered by the muscle is only in a vertical direction. Up and Down. That is the way gravity works. Up and down…not side to side or diagonally. Now with resistance bands, these can work on a horizontal plane or any angle you choose. You can add resistance to any type of movements, like twists, kicks, punches and throws. Resistance bands are great for improving specific areas.

2. RESISTANCE BANDS ARE IDEAL FOR BUILDING MUSCLE MASS

Resistance bands can be extremely effective if you are looking to put on more muscle. One of the biggest struggles that occurs when we enter into the world of fitness is the dreaded plateau. This is where we get to a point where we seem to be stuck and results come to a halt. This is from putting the same type of emphasis on the muscles. The muscles are simply adapting and getting bored. The best way to break through this barrier is to change the emphasis on the muscle by bringing in some variety to your workouts. Adding resistance bands to your routine can be a great way to blast through these plateaus. Any movement you do with free weights can be done with resistance bands but the effect on your muscles will always be different. This is because of the variation in the angle of resistance.

3. VARIABLE LINEAR RESISTANCE – THE SECRET WEAPON

I will keep this one simple. As the range of motion increases, the resistance increases as well. Let’s say you were doing curls with regular free weights. This is a great exercise, but as we start the movement from the bottom (eccentric) and curl upwards (concentric), the weight stays the same. Meaning, the resistance never changes. Now step on a resistance band and do the exact same movement, and you will notice that the resistance get’s heavier as the range of motion increases. This results in a greater work output through the full range of motion and it also increases the amount of muscle fibers being fired. The end result being a greater adaptation in muscle strength and size. Case Study

4. RESISTANCE BANDS MATCH THE NATURAL STRNGTH CURVE OF THE MUSCLE

This is where the strength of the muscle changes throughout the range of motion. Most muscles increase in strength up to a certain point throughout the movement, which from there, they become weaker. With free weights, we are limited to using what we are capable of using in our weakest position. This is usually at the start of the movement. This means that when we are in our strongest position, we are not getting an adequate amount of resistance. With resistance bands the movement starts easy and progressively get’s harder and we are getting resistance exactly where we need it (the point at which our muscles are in their strongest position).

5. GREAT FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY AND INJURY PREVENTION

Being able to isolate certain muscle groups from any angle makes resistance bands ideal for treating an injury or any type of physical therapy. Most physical therapy cannot be done with free weights because they rely on the gravity of the effect. Resistance bands on the other hand, can provide resistance on any plane and with variable linear resistance, they are able to deliver resistance the most effective way. We are getting resistance exactly where and when we need it, making our workouts more effective and safer.
